The PV ground-mounted system at the Mindelheim railway junction covers six hectares and produces up to 7.8 million kilowatt hours of green electricity per year – enough to supply over 3,000 households and save around 6,300 tons of CO₂ per year. The plant is a joint project between AE Allgäu Energie GmbH (Mindelheim) and Energieallianz Bayern GmbH & Co. KG (Hallbergmoos), which each hold a 50 percent stake in the operating company PV Gleisdreieck Mindelheim GmbH & Co. KG.
The electricity generated is marketed by the municipal company VWEW-energie and supplied directly to GROB-WERKE under a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA). “Purchasing regional green electricity strengthens our sustainability strategy and is an important contribution to decarbonization while ensuring long-term planning for our energy supply,” says Supervisory Board Chairman Christian Grob, explaining the motivation for the collaboration.
The regional PPA model is making a significant contribution to driving forward the energy transition in the region and making renewable energies economically viable. “With the PV system at the Gleisdreieck, we are sending a clear signal for regional value creation and sustainable energy production. It is gratifying to see how the city, companies, and citizens are taking responsibility together,” said Mindelheim's First Mayor Dr. Stephan Winter.
The purchase of green electricity from the open-space plant is only part of GROB-WERKE's commitment to sustainable energy supply. The company already operates its own PV system on the roof of a production hall, and further systems are already in the planning stage. In addition, GROB is continuously working at all its locations to increase energy and resource efficiency with the aim of minimizing production-related environmental impacts and conserving natural resources.
