For over 70 years, Rossi S.p.A. has been one of the world’s leading manufacturers of gearboxes, motors, and drive solutions. Founded in 1953 in Modena, Italy, the company is now part of the Movimenta Group and operates in more than 90 countries worldwide. With a broad product portfolio and over 1,000 employees, Rossi supports thousands of customers across a wide range of industries every day.
Technological Transformation as the Key to Success
To meet the growing demands of the market, Rossi launched a strategic project to optimize its manufacturing processes. “Rossi offers one of the world’s most comprehensive product ranges for industrial power transmission. To maintain this market position in the future, our goal was to shorten cycle times, increase production capacity, and simultaneously further improve the quality of our end products,” explains Andrea Raone, workshop manager at Rossi. At the same time, the internal management of production processes needed to be made more efficient.
In GROB, Rossi found the right partner for this transformation. GROB’s 5-axis machining centers enabled a fundamental advancement in manufacturing processes—particularly in gear cutting technology. By utilizing modern methods such as power skiving and gear hobbing, machining steps could be integrated directly into the machine. The result: fewer process steps, shorter lead times, and significantly improved component quality.
“The high quality of GROB’s 5-axis universal machining centers was the decisive factor in our decision to choose GROB. This precision is crucial, especially for demanding processes such as power skiving and external gear cutting,” said Andrea Raone.
A central component of the new manufacturing strategy is the integration of a rotary pallet storage system. This allows different machining steps and various component variants to be flexibly handled on a single system. “The integration of the pallet storage system has significantly optimized our production. This has allowed us to efficiently combine various machining steps and flexibly manufacture different components on the same machining center,” says Andrea Raone.
Rossi uses two high-performance milling and turning machining centers from GROB: the G750T for large and complex components such as beams or housing components, and the more compact G550T, which impresses with its dynamics and flexibility. Together, they cover a wide range of parts while maintaining consistently high quality standards.
“The outstanding results we’ve achieved with the G750T have reinforced our decision to continue our partnership with GROB. With the G550T, we now machine smaller components in high volumes and have been able to reduce cycle times by about 20 percent—while further improving machining quality,” says Leonardo Aguglia, Head of the Technology Department at Rossi.
A Strong Partnership for Sustainable Results
The close collaboration with GROB is evident not only in the technology but also in day-to-day operations. A key factor in this success is the fast and competent technical support. Thanks to the proximity to the site and a dedicated contact person, response times have been minimized and high machine availability ensured.
“In addition to the technology, GROB’s technical support was a decisive factor for us. We particularly appreciate that a service technician is available in the immediate vicinity of our plant and can respond quickly when needed,” summarizes Andrea Raone.
GROB also demonstrated its ability to find solutions to specific challenges. For example, to address issues with grid instability, a technical protection solution was developed that reliably safeguards machines against power failures and significantly increases operational safety.
For GROB, one thing is paramount in this collaboration: a partnership based on trust. From planning through implementation to after-sales service, GROB continuously supports its customers and works with them to develop tailor-made solutions.
“Together with Rossi, we have implemented two turnkey manufacturing solutions. In doing so, we were able to not only demonstrate our expertise as a machine tool manufacturer but also contribute our experience in process development. The result is significantly more efficient processes and fewer machining steps within a single machining center,” concludes Gianluca Nuzzaci, Sales Manager for Southern Italy at GROB.
The case study at Rossi illustrates how the combination of innovative technology, in-depth expertise, and close collaboration leads to measurable success. The improvements achieved in productivity, quality, and efficiency strengthen Rossi’s competitiveness in the long term—while also laying the foundation for future developments.
